2006 Los Angeles Auto Show I

The LA Auto Show has long been overshadowed by the North American International Auto show in Detroit. The press days for both shows are usually so close together that it causes headaches for the working media. Starting in 2006, the LA show will adopt a November time slot. The 2006 season will be unique in that there will actually be two LA shows.

Even though the LA Auto Show has been long overshadowed by the more glamourous NAIAS (Detroit Auto Show), it still had plenty to offer as the first show of 2006. GM made a big splash with the completely redesigned Suburban, with Jay Leno as guest host during the press conference. Pontiac debuted the speedy turbocharged Solstice GXP. The sleek new Mercedes-Benz S-Class made its first North American appearance at LA. Porsche announced an even hotter Cayenne Turbo S, and BMW displayed the autobahn-dominating M6 sports coupe. Audi showed the Q7 SUV, and the RS4 and S8 sports sedans for the LA Auto Show as well. Toyota amazed the press with its Yaris subcompact sedan, priced to compete with the Koreans. All these major introductions this year changed the LA Auto Show from an also-ran to a credible, albeit smaller competitor to the NAIAS.
