2006 North American International Auto Show

Although there are other auto shows in the US each year, the Detroit show is by far the most important. Thousands of photographers, reporters, analysts, editors, industrial spies, and cell-phone wielding corporate types descend annually for the press days that precede the public show.

Small by the standards of other convention centers, Cobo Hall still holds its own with a lot of product crammed into large, colorful and active displays. The press preview days are packed new concept cars and production models. Significant new products include the best-selling Toyota Camry, Hyundai Sonata, and the vastly improved full-size SUVs from General Motors. Ford is looking to find some success in the crossover segment with the sharp looking Ford Edge and Lincoln MKX. With gas price woes last year, many buyers will probably look at a host of new economy cars like the Nissan Sentra, Nissan Versa, Honda Fit, and Toyota Yaris. For those looking for something to aspire towards: an all-new Lexus LS finally has the looks to match its benchmark status. Modern updates of classic names like Shelby, Camaro, Challenger, and Miura will no doubt draw stares.
