2007 North American International Auto Show

The Motor City hosts the most significant auto show in the country: the North American International Auto Show. More commonly known as the Detroit Auto Show, this annual exhibition of cars and trucks is a showcase for the most significant US introductions by American, Asian, and German automakers. During the three media days, Detroit is a hectic blur of overcrowded press conferences and networking opportunities that can leave attendees dazed. We love covering all the hot new cars and trucks at Detroit, but we always breathe a sigh of relief when it's over.

Each year, manufacturers cram more press conferences and and new car introductions at the NAIAS. It’s enough to provoke sensory overload for even jaded journalists. Aside from the usual parade of new cars and concepts, the Chinese SUV manufacturer Changfeng made its first appearance at the NAIAS. Despite the significance of this event, it will be a few more years before the Chinese will be credible competitors in the hypercompetitive US market. The American manufacturers, especially GM, made a great impression with their hybrid concepts and new model introductions. Mercedes-Benz and Audi had relatively flashy press conferences, but no significant new vehicle introductions. Toyota showed the breadth and depth of its products with new sports car and pickups revealed at Detroit. Despite all the glitz and hype, one glaring shortcoming at the NAIAS was the inadequacy of Cobo Arena as a venue for this auto show. Cobo Arena is in dire need of expansion to do the NAIAS justice as the premier auto show in the US.
